The Truth About Motivation

The hard way to get yourself to workout is to say “I need to workout. I need to workout. I need to workout.”

The easier way is to break it down into parts. “Let me bring my gym bag to work,” then: “Let me drive toward the gym after work”, then: “Now that I’m here I might as well walk inside”, then: “I’m going to warm-up with the class”, then “I just finished a 60min class and I feel great.”

A simple, effective strategy for exercising is to take things step-by-step. Don’t put huge, lofty goals in front of yourself. Just wake up and find a way to get yourself into the gym. Before work, after work, whenever. Eventually, you’ll want to do it every day because of how it makes you feel. And if you skip a day or two, don’t let that be an excuse to give up. Just start back at step 1. Keep going.
